Which, given the time period when Mulan most likely took place in (somewhere in the late 3rd century), writings from the Liu Song Dynasty (420 – 479 CE) claimed that homosexuality was just as common as heterosexuality. 

Basically, Shang coulda went for it and his troops would have been all #whatever, #bouttime.

In fact, it wasn’t until about 1507 that homosexual sex (and by that I mean male on male, cause for whatever reason people were starting to think women just didn’t have sex with each other? IDK ancient people are just as cray as modern ones) was expressly outlawed. Possibly due to influence from Catholic European traders, but there’s “no proof” for that.
