Marie Antoinette is still one of the most hypnotically beautiful films ever made. Every scene is utterly glorious to look at. But as a film viewer, I just can’t work out if it is truly anything else than, you know, nice looking.

The movie does suggest both Louis and Marie were not evil, just kind of blunderers and idiots and spoiled.

Historically, this is true.  

You wonder about a couple that takes seven years to consummate their marriage.
