I think people who like Snape and Draco, or say that they were not such bad people (especially Draco), have probably watched the movies more often and maybe read the books only once, because in the books, it is shown way more clearly how awful they both are in comparison to the movie.

*sigh* This again? Lemme tell you a story. The story of my love for Draco as I STILL remember it after years.

When I was 10 years old, I decided to read the Harry Potter books. The last one had recently come out, I think? And I decided to read them because they looked neat.

There was this awful stuck-up asshole called Draco Malfoy, and he was one of my favorites just because I loved to hate him. He was so mean and terrible, was he EVER gonna get what was coming to him? I really wanted to see him knocked down a few pegs. And then… and then I got to Half-Blood Prince.

“Tell me what’s wrong… I can help you…” “No one can help me,” said Malfoy. I read this, and I thought, wait, what? What’s Draco doing talking to Moaning Myrtle? Why does he need help?

“Malfoy was crying – actually crying – tears streaming down his pale face.”

WAIT WHY IS DRACO CRYING SINCE WHEN DOES HE HAVE FEELINGS BESIDES HATE?

And I remember realizing… He’s crying because he doesn’t want to do this and he thinks Voldemort will kill him if he doesn’t do it and he’s all alone and he’s so scared and DRACO MALFOY I AM SUPPOSED TO HATE YOU WHO GAVE YOU THE RIGHT TO CRY?

And then Harry finds him, and uses sectumsempra, and Draco is laying there terrified and covered in blood. And then I remember… closing the book and crying.

Because why would Harry do that? He was supposed to be the good guy, and Draco needed someone’s help, couldn’t Harry help him? He’s so sad, why would you hurt him? That’s not fair, you could’ve killed him, just because he’s mean doesn’t mean he should die, that’s not what I wanted to happen!!

I’m 19, and I still remember being 10 years old and literally crying because I didn’t expect Draco Malfoy to have a heart and I didn’t expect Harry to do something so cruel.

I used to count how many times I’d read all the books over the years, but I kinda lost count after the 14th time or so?

And I used to actually feel embarrassed to like Draco so much. Up until fairly recently, actually. But now? If anyone tries to say “you like Draco because he’s hot” or “you must not have read the books to like Draco” or “you’re just pretending he didn’t do anything wrong” I might not even dignify it with a response.

Because yeah Draco did SO much wrong. If you want me to list all the things Draco did wrong, sure, I’ll do that. And I’ll include “caused a 10 year old girl reading the series for the first time to cry over him” in the list. And then I’ll go on loving him. I’ll interpret his character in my way and you interpret it in yours, okay?
